Skin Cancer And The Health Benefits Of Nutrition Supplements

The three most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Each are named after the type of skin cell from which it arises. Basal and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common and curable types of skin cancer. Melanoma is less common, but the most serious, and is responsible for 75% of all skin cancer related deaths.
skin cancerSkin cancers are most often caused by overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. These UV rays destroy the genetic material (DNA) in the skin cells, causing severe tissue damage and cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of the three forms of skin cancer. Overexposure to strong sunlight is the major factor. It rarely spreads elsewhere in the body or kills. Although, it is still considered malignant because it can cause substantial disfigurement and destruction by invading surrounding tissue.

The first sign of basal cell carcinoma is a large pearly looking lump usually occurring on the face near the eyes or nose. The lump then becomes an ulcer with a raw, moist center and a hard border that may bleed. Scabs continually form over the ulcer. The scabs come off, but the ulcer never heals.

In squamous cell carcinoma, the underlying skin cells are damaged. This leads to the development of a tumor or lump under the skin. The ears, face, hands and lower lip are affected in most cases. The lump may resemble a wart or an ulceration that never heals. Detected early enough, treatment is effective.

Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It can be cured if discovered and treated early. With this form of skin cancer, a tumor occurs from the pigment producing cells of the deeper layers of the skin. It often begins as a lesion that looks like a mole.

Most moles appear early in life, so be aware of new moles that appear after the age of 40. Also be aware of any mole that appears unusual; changes in size, color or texture. They should be looked at right away by a dermatologist.

Warning Signs Of Skin Cancer

1. A skin growth that increases in size and/or appears pearly, translucent, brown, tan, black or multicolored.

2. A mole, birthmark or beauty mark that changes color, grows in size or thickness, changes in texture or becomes irregular in outline.

3. A spot or growth that hurts, itches, crusts, scabs over, erodes or bleeds.

Nutrition Supplements

Manufacturers are now incorporating vitamins A, C, D and E in sunscreen to help protect the skin. Many nutritionists and holistic doctors recommend oral supplements of all the antioxidants to neutralize the free radicals created by ultraviolet radiation; as well as by oxidation within the body, that can harm DNA and both internal and external cells.

Coenzyme Q10 improves cellular oxygenation. Take 100 milligrams daily.

Evening primrose oil for cellular protection. Take 2 capsules before meals.

Selenium is a powerful free radical scavenger. Take 50 - 200 micrograms daily.

Vitamin A in the form of beta carotene. Take 25,000 - 50,000 IU daily. Taking an extra vitamin A before an expected outing helps prevent the temporary night blindness that often follows exposure to extremely bright lights.

Vitamin B complex - the B vitamins are necessary for normal cell division and function. Take 100 milligrams daily.

Vitamin C plus bioflavonoids is powerful anti-cancer agent. Take 1,5000 - 5,000 milligrams daily in divided doses to help prevent pigment clumping and skin sags by strengthening the supportive collagen.

Vitamin D. Sunscreens as low as SPF 8 block the body’s formation of natural vitamin D from sunlight on the bare skin. Take 400 IU daily, if not provided by fortified milk or a daily multivitamin.

Vitamin E. In a study, participants taking 200 IU of vitamin E each day for a year reduced their free radical level by 26 percent.

Herbal Nutrition Supplements

Gotu kola contains compounds which have an excellent reputation in supporting skin health, increasing the concentration of antioxidants and maintaining healthy blood supply to the affected area. Available in capsule form, follow packaging directions.

Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is one of the best and most well known herbs for skin health. It helps to maintain healthy skin and tissue health. It is available as a cream to be applied topically. Follow packaging directions.

Chaparral is a bitter herb that acts as a free radical scavenger and protects the skin from the harmful effects of radiation and sun exposure. Available in capsule form, follow packaging directions.

Non-conventional Strategies of Cancer Treatment

cancer treatmentA cure for cancer exists through the utilization of yoga, a urban center, Texas, cancer specialist same throughout a seminar in capital of Oklahoma within the Eighties.

But physicians refused to acknowledge the cure, said Col. Hansa Raval, M.D., a diagnostician with the us Army. Dr. Raval same her add cytotechnology nine a diagnostic branch of drugs designed to pinpoint early stages of cancer i used to be futile till she began researching the utilization of non-conventional strategies of treatment.

The specialist same she witnessed the utilization of Raja yoga and meditation cure disabling inflammatory disease, headaches and even cancer.

And even supposing Raval offers proof, that she same was collected throughout 2 years of study at the Brahma Kumaris World non secular University in Asian country, she has been pink-slipped by alternative members of the medical community as a queer duck.

Yoga's success as a treatment methodology is as a result of another hypothesis Raval proposes that ninety eight % of all cancer is psychoneurotic.

This is not intonation or mantra reciting, the medical practitioner same. it is not supported scriptures. it is not a cult. it is not training program. It's deeper than that. this is often a full-proof methodology of meditation, an in depth understanding of what the soul is.

Raval maintains that medical colleges belittle the study of non-conventional strategies of cancer treatment in favor of standard strategies like radiation, therapy, and treatment through machines.'

Medical colleges teach students that the person is merely a body. however the mind has the facility to cure the body. By definition, psychoneurotic suggests that a mixture of mind, or soul and body.

The soul creates the illness, however the body suffers. If the psyche creates the illness, the sole thanks to cure it's through the psyche. it is a terribly easy formula: treating the seed of the matter.

Further, studies in psychic communication all purpose to the treatment of sickness through treatment of the soul.

The World non secular University, that has branches in thirty countries, teaches peace and perfection for health and happiness through the utilization of Raja yoga. The university gained standing as a non-governmental member of the UN and has offices at the U.N. building in big apple.

Raja yoga teaches students to go looking their soul world for answers on wherever they came from and why the cancer entered their body. They learn what role faith, stress, family and modus vivendi contend within the cancer.

Important Facts You Must Know About Breast Cancer

High Risk Profile

Intake of alcohol, smoking and obesity increase the risk of breast cancer.

  • A woman is at a higher risk of having breast cancer if there is a history of breast cancer in her family.
  • Women who start with the menstrual cycle at an early age (before 12 years) or achieve menopause at a very late age (after 55 years) are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer.
  • A woman who had cancer in one breast is at an increased risk of cancerous growth in the second breast.
  • Women who have never experienced childbirth, those who had children after the age of 35 and those who have never breast-fed their babies are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.
  • The higher is your exposure to radiations, the greater are your chances of developing breast cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

The patient is most likely to first notice a lump in the breast. Lumps in the armpits may also be indicative of breast cancer.

There may be changes in size and shape of the breast. Inversion of the nipple may also be seen. Skin over the breast will look like skin of an orange and also show redness and dimpling. There may be discharge of pus-like fluid from the nipples.

During the advanced stages, the patient may complain of discomfort and pain in the breast, weight loss and swelling of the arm which is next to the breast with cancer.

Diagnosis

Staging for breast cancer is based on the size of the tumour (T), whether or not the tumour has spread to the lymph nodes (N) in the armpits, and whether the tumour has metastasized (M) (i.e. spread to distant sites) and this is called as TNM classification.

Stage 0 is a pre-cancerous condition, stage 1–3 cancers are within the breast or regional lymph nodes and stage 4 cancer is 'metastatic' and has poor prognosis. Thus the survival rate will depend on the type of cancer and its staging.

Breast cancer screening will help in early detection. Clinical examination, selfexamination, mammography and ultrasound are some of the screening methods/tests.

Breast cancer diagnosis will include clinical examination of the breasts, the armpits and the neck and chest region; mammography to identify a breast lump, a breast MRI to better identify the breast lump and a breast ultrasound to know the consistency of the lump. A CT scan may be done to see if there is spread of cancer to other sites.

Biopsy of the breast tissue can be done using fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Lymph node biopsy will help to detect cancerous spread.

Treatment

A team of breast cancer doctors will include breast cancer surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons.

The size, stage and growth of the tumor will determine the kind of breast cancer treatment that may be required.

Breast cancer surgery referred to as Mastectomy involves the removal of the tumor along with some of the surrounding, healthy tissue. The whole breast may be removed or only a part of it may be removed depending upon the tumor size and growth.

After breast removal, a cosmetic surgery may be performed for breast reconstruction so as to improve the aesthetic appearance. Some women may opt for breast prosthesis.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be given after the breast cancer surgery. Chemotherapy will kill any cells that are rapidly dividing in the body. Chemotherapy results in temporary hair loss and may also cause digestive troubles. Chemotherapy regimens for treatment of breast cancer can cause early menopause.

Radiotherapy is used to destroy microscopic tumor cells that may have not been removed during surgery.

Radiation and surgery are forms of local treatment whereas chemotherapy is a type of systemic treatment.

Blood tests and mammograms will continue after treatment as well.

Simple cough medicice may cure cancer

A simple cough medicine has been found to help cure prostate cancer. Cough medicines containing the natural ingredient noscapine which is found in cabbage and tomatoes can stop the growth of tumours. Read the following article:

An ingredient used in cough medicine for more than 50 years could be a powerful new treatment for prostate cancer.
Noscapine, a drug derived from opium, has been found to stunt tumour growth and reduce the risk of cancer spreading by up to 65 per cent.
Now other studies are under way to see if it could help fight cancer of the breast, lungs and ovaries, as well as lymphoma - a tumour that affects the lymph nodes under the arm.

Simple cough medicice may cure cancerAlthough the drug's anti-cancer properties were first recognised back in the Sixties, in-depth studies have only taken place in recent years as drug companies have stepped up the search for new and powerful cancer treatments.
The drug is used in over-thecounter products, such as Vicks Dry Cough medicine, because it is highly effective at stopping coughs.
Although opium is the main source of noscapine, it is also found in tiny quantities in tomatoes and cabbage leaves.

The latest findings, by U.S. scientists, were presented at a recent prostate cancer conference in Colorado.

Experts at the Prostate Cancer Research and Educational Foundation in San Diego carried out laboratory tests to verify the drug's ability to fight cancer.
Mice were fed doses of the drug and their cancers were closely monitored to see what effect the cough-syrup ingredient had.
Study leader Dr Israel Barken, who claims to have been using noscapine on prostate cancer patients for more than a decade, said the results confirmed the drug was effective and safe.

Women's Health: Detecting And Treating Breast Cancer

Women need to periodically visit an Obstetrician or a Gynecologist for pelvic scans or for taking a Pap test, especially if they are 21 years of age or older. Any study on women's health would surely delve into the rise of cancer as a dangerous illness that may lead to death and is second only to heart diseases in terms of most occurring illnesses.

Knowing the Facts

Detecting And Treating Breast CancerWomen's health is directly impacted by cancer which is thought to have been diagnosed in more than a million people in the United States, though it is certain that cancer affliction can be drastically reduced by adopting healthier lifestyles, improving nutrition and avoiding being exposed to the sun. In addition, cancer screening, information regarding cancer as well as referral services would all help to significantly improve women's health.

Women who have attained the age of 65 years or who are older are believed to make up half of the new breast cancer cases every year and the number for older women having breast cancer is expected to double by the year 2030 as the baby boomers age. The anomaly is that younger women who have breast cancer receive better care than their older counterparts, even though women want their physicians to look at the disease not their dates of birth.

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer afflicting women's health and is thought to have affected one out of every 11-12 women at some stage of their lives in the Western hemisphere, and in spite of significant efforts being made to achieve early detection and provide effectual treatment, supposedly about 20% of all women having breast cancer would die as a result of this disease.

To detect cases of breast cancer it is necessary to have screening performed which includes breast self-examination and mammography though only the latter has been found to lessen mortality from breast cancer. Women's health needs aids such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect cancers that are not visible through mammography methods.

Besides cancer, another cause of worry regarding women's health is diabetes, and to fight this disease the National Public Health Initiative on Diabetes and Women's health have made a television video on diabetes and women's health and this video highlights the tales regarding women which gives hope and encouragement to women as well as their families in coping with diabetes. Bottom line: for good health, it is important to educate oneself.

Breast Cancer Grants For Health Care Agencies

When it comes to breast cancer, there are many different kinds of grants each one designed for a specific purpose. Nevertheless, whether the money is needed for diagnosing, treating, doing research, educating, purchasing equipment, paying for staff, etc. there is always a source of funds in the form of a grant to pay for it or finance all the costs associated to these practices.

The funds do not come only from government agencies. On the contrary, the most significant amounts come from private foundations and other non-profit institutions that want to contribute to fighting breast cancer. Eligibility for either government grants or private funding differs from grant to grant but almost any health care agency that is performing tasks related to breast cancer screening, diagnosing or treating will find a source of funds in the form of a grant if needed.

Breast Cancer

The Purpose Of These Grants

Why do private institutions and the federal government provide funding for these projects? Simple: The idea is to assign the money needed to research on this topic and support different developments that concentrate on breast cancer. The projects can focus on treatments or education or any other area provided that it is breast cancer related.

The mission is to offer to women who are medically underserved all that is needed in terms of information to avoid breast cancer whenever possible and to treat it or eliminate it if feasible. This includes education, screening, detection, treatment, medicines, hiring staff, etc. There are many costs that are related to the subject that need to be covered and these grants are meant for that.

The Amounts at Stake

All these costs are quite high and therefore much money is needed to cover for them. But contrary to common belief, these grants provide increasingly higher funds that are already significant. For instance, the higher grant amount provided by a private institution not so long ago reached almost the figure of 5,000,000 dollars and was awarded to a single institution fighting breast cancer.

What Have The Funds Been Awarded For

So far breast cancer grants from private institutions have been awarded for educational programs to reach the community and let the same community refer other community members so the information can be spread as thoroughly as possible. They have also been awarded for providing support to cancer patients, not only physically but also psychologically.

When it comes to financial assistance, these grants have been awarded not only to provide medical assistance but also for counseling, child care for those mothers that cannot take care of their children due to the illness, transportation to and from the clinic where all the procedures are performed and many other types of financial assistance that a victim of breast cancer may need.

Also, many grants where awarded not only by private institutions but also by the government for seminars on breast cancer, research and many other scientific topics that also need to be funded in order to develop new ways to address this problem that affects hundreds of thousands women across the country and world.

Calcium Protects Against Cancer

Every woman with a head on her shoulders knows about the importance of calcium for strong bones to prevent osteoporosis, a serious disease affecting older women. I myself have been a long time consumer of low-fat dairy products for this very reason (plus I love cottage cheese with almost anything). But now we have an added reason to wolf down the calcium.

New research has shown that women with higher intakes of calcium appear to have a lower risk of cancer overall, and both men and women with high calcium intakes have lower risks of colorectal cancer and other cancers of the GI system (this is from the February 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine).

male breast cancerThe Institute of Medicine currently recommends 1,200 milligrams of calcium for adults age 50 and older, and the 2005 dietary guidelines for Americans recommend 3 cups per day of low-fat or fat-free dairy products. In the study, the decrease in risk for women was with intake of up to 1,300 mgs per day, after which no further risk reduction was observed. In both men and women, dairy food and calcium intakes were inversely associated with cancers of the GI and one-fifth of men who consumed the most calcium through food and supplements (about 1,530 mg per day) had a 16 percent lower risk of these types of cancer than the one-fifth who consumed the least (526 mg per day). For women, those in the top one-fifth of calcium consumption (1,881 mg per day) had a 23 percent lower risk than those in the bottom one-fifth (494 mg per day) with a most pronounced decrease for colorectal cancer. So what is it about dairy that is so protective against cancer?

Dairy is relatively high in anti-carcinogenic nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and conjugated linoleic acid. Calcium has been shown to reduce abnormal growth and induce normal turnover among cells in the GI tract and breast and it binds to bile and fatty acids, which may reduce damage to the mucous membrane in the large intestine. So the bottom line is: even if you’re dieting, be sure to include that lowfat dairy to protect yourself against disease!

1.2 Million People in England Could Try to Quit Smoking

"As many as 1.2 million people in England could try to quit smoking in the New Year, figures suggest."

Cancer Research UK analysis of smoking trends since 2006 found January was the most popular month to quit, with an average of one in eight smokers trying.

The charity also said those who tried in January tended to be more successful than those trying in other months.

Try to Quit SmokingThe NHS is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the free support methods available to help smokers quit. In the New Year a series of "Getting Off Cigarettes" adverts will highlight the range of free stop-smoking support provided by the NHS. The last available figures showed around 24% of adults in England smoked.

With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small Professor Robert West The NHS Information Centre reported in September that more people had quit smoking in the first three months of 2007 than in any other quarter in anticipation of the smoking ban that came into force in the summer. Professor Robert West, director of tobacco studies at the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Unit, calculated that 13% of smokers tried to quit in January 2007 - the equivalent of every adult in Newcastle, Manchester, Coventry and Bristol. By monitoring trends in quit rates, he also found that those who chose to quit as their New Year's resolution did better than those who quit at other times of the year.

Success
He said: "We have found that almost half of all smokers actually try to quit at least once over the course of the year and one in eight try to quit in January. "But I was particularly interested to find that, contrary to popular scepticism of New Year's Resolutions, smokers who quit in January also tended to be more successful at staying off cigarettes." He said that many people did not know about the free support that was available to them on the NHS or were put off because they did not know what the services were offering.

"It's not like alcoholics anonymous, it's just practical advice," he said.

"With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small.

"The first thing is to get the right medication, whether that's nicotine replacement, zyban or champix, and the really important thing is having it explained exactly how to use it and to make sure you use enough of it."

Contrary to the NHS Information Centre report, his figures suggest that although people intended to quit because of the smoking ban, the actual number of people smoking has not yet changed.

"What we saw in Ireland was it took a few months for the effects to take hold."

Prostate Cancer Treatments

Prostate Cancer Treatments

Of the prostate cancer treatments available, your doctor will recommend the treatment option that is best for you. The decision will depend on your overall health and how far advanced your cancer is. If the treatment recommended for you is not something you're comfortable with, for instance you may not be comfortable with external beam radiation therapy; you can give your doctor your opinion. It's important that you are at ease with the decision. Discuss it with your family as well, particularly the possible side effects and cure rate.

Oncologists specialize in certain fields. The one you are referred to will be a specialist in the treatment prescribed for you.

Watching and Waiting

The first strategy in most treatment plans is watching and waiting. The signs and symptoms that may indicate prostate cancer are also indications of other problems such as an infection in or close to your prostate. Watching and waiting is to determine which condition your symptoms are from.

During this period, blood samples will be tested for PSA levels and tissue samples may be sent for a biopsy.Elevated levels of the prostate specific antigen may point to a less serious medical problem. This is why a tissue sample may be taken; to verify or to rule out the presence of cancer. Remember that early treatment usually has a better possibility of cure.

Surgery

Men who are the best candidates for prostate cancer surgery are the ones most likely to achieve a successful recovery from the procedure. These are men with good overall health and who do not have secondary conditions that may interfere with recovery like heart problems. Surgery can lead to some serious side effects including incontinence and impotence.

Radiation

There are 3 different types of radiation therapies. External beam therapy is typically a stream of X-rays aimed at your pelvis from a device outside the body. The X-rays burn away cancer cells through repeated treatments over several weeks.

An alternative external beam therapy is Proton Beam Therapy. Instead of using X-rays, protons, which are charged particles or ions, are streamed at your pelvis, again from a device outside your body.

Brachytherapy is the introduction of several radioactive seeds directly into your prostate. They are implanted with a series of injections while you are under a general anesthetic.

All of the radiation treatments above work on the principle of burning cancer cells away with high energy particles. Radiation treatment can take place over time, and is subject to the same side effects as surgery.

Hormone Therapies

Hormone therapy is a method of chemical treatment that seeks to alter your hormone levels to halt or slow the growth of cancer cells. This procedure is temporary because most patients develop a resistance to the effectiveness of the injections after about 2 years.

Hormone therapy is not a cure and is usually recommended when the patient has a higher stage (T-3 or T-4) of prostate cancer. The idea is to prolong the patient's life and slow the cancer's growth.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a procedure where, during surgery, your prostate is frozen and then thawed to destroy cancer cells.

HIFU

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound uses focused ultrasound to heat and evaporate diseased tissue out of your prostate. The device is aimed using an MRI scan and targeted tissue is heated to 80°C. The result is tissue that can no longer reproduce and so cannot grow any further. Healthy tissue is spared because the effective area of the ultrasound pulse is very small and only a few cubic mm at a time can be targeted. It is done on an out-patient basis and does not affect the quality of life that some of the other treatments do. HIFU also results in fewer significant side effects than surgery or radiation. HIFU for prostate cancer is highly effective and can often be used for recurrent cancer. This is not an option, however, once the cancer has spread beyond the prostate.

Stage 4 Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer

Prostate CancerThe prostate gland is about the same size and shape as a chestnut. It's located at the base of the bladder. The urethra runs below it between two lobes of muscle tissue that reach from either side of the prostate. These two muscular lobes are the way in which the flow of urine is regulated through the urethra.

Inside the prostate seminal fluid is produced. This is the fluid that is released during orgasm and carries a man's sperm.

When abnormal cells are produced and begin to reproduce, they grow into a mass of tissue called a tumor. When the cancerous cells begin to outgrow the normal cells, the functions of the prostate gland and the two lobes become compromised.

Usually prostate cancer has a slow growth rate. There have been cases where it has developed abnormally fast, but this is not typically the case. Prostate cancer cure rates are quite high when it is in the early stages, but there are typically no symptoms - so regular screening is essential.

Stage T1

Stage T1 prostate cancer is when it is first developing. Tumors at this point are small and there are no physical signs or symptoms outside of an elevated PSA level in the blood. PSA is the prostate specific antigen released into the blood as a result of tumors developing in the gland. A doctor may only be suspicious of the presence of cancer if the blood test results indicated an unusually high PSA level. If the suspicion is very high, for instance if the patient had close relatives with prostate cancer, a tissue sample would be sent for a biopsy to verify it.

Stage T2

T2 prostate cancer is the stage at which the functions of the prostate gland begin to be affected by the growing disease. Symptoms at this point include the following.
  • An intense need to urinate
  • Frequent urination throughout the night
  • A feeling that the bladder is still full even after urinating
  • Trouble starting or stopping the flow of urine
  • Unable to urinate at all
  • Weak urine flow
  • Pain or burning while urinating or during orgasm
  • Blood in semen or urine
A doctor at this stage may be able to feel an area of hardness on the surface of the prostate during a digital rectal exam although this is not always the case.

If these signs and symptoms are present, a blood test would be done for PSA levels. A tissue sample would be sent for biopsy.

Stage T3

T3 prostate cancer is the first stage at which the tumors have multiplied and often the cancer has grown beyond the confines of the prostate.

Once the cancer has extended outside of the prostate, there is no known cure.

The first likely destination of the cancer at this point is within the seminal vesicles. In some cases it may reach into the bladder or rectum as well.

Stage T4

T4 prostate cancer is the last stage in the progress of prostate cancer. It has likely moved into the bladder, rectum and pelvic bone. It may also begin to travel to other parts of the body through the blood stream. There is no cure for this stage, but hormone therapy may help to slow the disease.

Prostate cancer staging is important for your urologist to determine the best course of treatment and the likelihood of cure. The key to surviving prostate cancer is early screening, detection and treatment. Treatments besides the traditional surgery and radiation are available, including high intensity focused ultrasound. Discuss your options with your doctor.

Smoking Tied to One Type of Skin Cancer

Smoking may not only cause wrinkles and sagging skin, it might also increase your risk of one type of skin cancer, researchers suggest in a new report.

Studies have linked smoking to a long list of health effects, including heart disease and lung cancer, but the evidence has been mixed for skin cancer.

More than 3.5 million cases of the disease are found every year in the U.S., making it the most common of all cancers. While the two main forms -- basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma -- are rarely deadly, researchers say they are on the rise.

In a new study, Fiona Bath-Hextall of the University of Nottingham in England and colleagues pooled the available evidence on the link between tobacco and basal and squamous cell cancers, which start in the outer layer of the skin.

Based on 14 previous studies, smokers didn't appear to have higher rates of basal cell cancer. But they did have a 52-percent increase in their risk of squamous cell cancer, based on six studies that varied in size, duration and design.

That extra risk is similar to that of ultraviolet radiation, the most well-known risk factor for squamous cell cancer, according to a commentary published along with the new results in the Archives of Dermatology.
Smoking Tied to One Type of Skin CancerBut the commentary, by Dr. Joris Verkouteren and Dr. Tamar Nijsten at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, also warns that the six studies were relatively small and were not necessarily comparable.

Because all of the studies are based on observations, it's impossible to say for certain whether smoking caused the increase in skin cancer risk. While current smokers had a higher risk than former smokers, there was no link with the number of cigarettes smoked per day or how long a person had been smoking.

NO HIGHER RISK OF MELANOMA

Still, the researchers believe it's likely that tobacco causes basal cell skin cancer, and Bath-Hextall called the findings "another good reason to give up smoking."

In an email to Reuters Health, she said people should regularly check their skin for early skin cancer. She added that doctors should "actively survey" people at high risk of squamous cell cancer such as smokers.

Oddly, smokers don't seem to be at increased risk for melanoma. In fact, some studies have suggested they might even have a smaller chance of getting the disease -- although scientists are still trying to figure out if that's really true.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-backed expert panel, says there is too little data to balance the harms and benefits of skin cancer screening.

However, the task force recommends counseling fair-skinned children and young adults aged 10 to 24 years about cutting back on ultraviolet radiation -- whether from the sun or indoor tanning -- to reduce their risk of skin cancer.

While squamous and basal cell carcinomas are the most common skin cancer, melanoma is the deadliest, accounting for nearly 9,000 of the 12,000 or so skin cancer deaths each year in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society.
